How to choose a paint color.
Choosing Paint Colors: Tips For Making It Easier
One aspect of interior design that can make or break how comfortable you feel in any given room is choosing paint colors. With hundreds of thousands of different shades, tones, and variations of colors you might start to feel overwhelmed. How can you choose a color that best compliments the rest of the building? What colors fit well with the purpose/mood of your room, house, or place of business?
These questions and more can seem unanswerable, especially if you’re new to interior/exterior design. That’s why we’ve written this blog post - it’s filled with helpful tips for choosing good paint colors. So keep reading to learn more!
Tip #1 - Make use of color swatches
One of the simplest ways to choose a good paint color is by using paint swatches. These can be found at most (if not all) paint stores as well as some other hardware/interior & exterior design stores. Find some paint swatches in colors and shades that you like and bring them to the room (or rooms) that you plan to paint.
Hold different swatches up to the walls to get a bit of a feel for what colors could work - and which ones couldn’t. You might still feel undecided after experimenting with different swatches, but you should have at least some idea of what paint colors would work well in your space.
Tip #2 - Take advantage of different resources
If you’re having a hard time choosing paint colors, even after looking at different swatches, it might be time to look for inspiration elsewhere. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources and websites to help you do just that. Pinterest is an incredible well of inspiration; simply search ‘paint colors’ or ‘good paint colors for [insert room/business of your choice]’ - you might be surprised at how many good ideas pop up!
Other great resources to check out include magazines that focus on interior design such as Architectural Digest, World of Interiors, or Elle Decor. Often, they’ll provide the name of the paints that are used in featured rooms - so convenient if you see a paint color you really like. Also, you may find some use in watching TV shows that focus on redesigning buildings. HGTV shows like House Hunters or Fixer Upper are a great place to start. While they might not name different paints, it’s still possible to be inspired as you watch the painting process.
Tip #3 - Consult painting experts
When choosing paint colors, it can be great to have more than one opinion as to what shade, tone, and color is right for your room, home, or business. One of the best things you can do when deciding on a good color is to talk with some experts in the field - people who know what they’re talking about and who can give you good advice.
One of our favorite places to go for advice and information about painting is Benjamin Moore. The employees there are knowledgeable, professional, and easy to talk to - they’d love to help you choose the right paint color. But besides that, Benjamin Moore is one of the best paint stores when it comes to having the most up to date colors, designs, and more. If you want your building to really stand out and look great, Benjamin Moore colors are a great place to start.
Tip #4 - Hire a professional designer
We know that it’s possible to choose a great paint color and paint everything yourself. But why go to all that trouble when you could hire a dedicated professional designer to come in and help you create the space you’ve always wanted? We have worked with Breanne Heavenor from BreDesign Interior on many projects to help her clients choose some amazing colors and designs.
